Purdue football: 3 things to know about QB Aidan O’Connell

Purdue's quarterback situation can't catch a break from the injury bug this season.

The Boilermakers keep dropping further down the depth chart. Adian O'Connell made his second start of his career against Wisconsin.

O'Connell's first start came against Northwestern. He connected on 34-of-50 passes for 271 yards and two touchdowns in the 24-22 win.

Here are some things to know about the Sophomore from Long Grove, Illinois.

Aidan O'Connell is a walk-on

There aren't many Power 5 schools that will start a walk-on at any position this season. Purdue is starting one at the most important position.

O'Connell had a scholarship offer to Wheaton College, but he decided to walk-on to the Purdue team in 2017.

He began the season as the fourth-string quarterback.

Aidan O'Connell the fourth-quarter hero

O'Connell has already played the hero once this season. He came late in the fourth quarter of the Nebraska game with the Boilermakers trailing.

O'Connell completed 6-of-7 passes on the final drive for 62 yards while leading a game-winning touchdown drive.

O'Connell not a heralded recruit

Purdue quarterback Aidan O'Connell (16) celebrates with fans after defeating Nebraska, 31-27, Saturday, Nov. 2, 2019 at Ross-Ade Stadium in West Lafayette.

It probably isn't a huge surprise, but O'Connell wasn't the most sought-after recruit. He only started one season in high school.

He completed 183 of 297 attempts for school-record 2,741 yards with school-record 26 touchdowns and seven interceptions for Stevenson High School.
