Pedestrian struck and killed by train near Galesburg, police say

One person is dead after being hit by a moving train late Thursday night near the Galesburg city limits.

The Knox County Sheriff's Office says that at 9:56 p.m., they and the Galesburg Police Department were called to the scene of an incident in which a train hit a pedestrian moving over the tracks.

When they arrived, they found the pedestrian. The Galesburg Fire Department and Galesburg Hospitals' Ambulance Service began life-saving measures. The person was transported to OSF HealthCare St. Mary Medical Center, where they died shortly thereafter.

The person's identity is currently being withheld, with an autopsy scheduled by the Knox County Coroner's Office.

The sheriff's office is currently investigating the incident.
